There are 17 states within the E-ZPass system network. It is widely used in the Midwestern and Eastern areas of the USA, and it’s convenient for those who regularly travel through toll booths and would like to make the process smoother.
This has been possible since thirty years ago, thanks to the E-ZPass.
To use the system, you must have previously registered on the network and acquired a transponder.
The mentioned device must be activated through the different toll lanes, tunnels, and bridges.
Even if thousands of users are using the system, many people don’t need it but may require it for a one-time journey.
If you’re wondering whether you can use someone else’s E-ZPass transponder or not, yes, it is possible, as long as you are using a vehicle of the same class.
Also, to avoid problems, temporarily registering your car on that person’s E-ZPass account is recommended. You can find here a list of all the E-ZPass websites.
Remember that they automatically take a photo of each car’s license plate every time you drive through a toll booth.
So you are committing a violation when they check the information and find out it doesn’t match what the E-ZPass has registered. In these cases, you will end up paying an expensive fine and the total price of the toll.

How can I use someone else’s E-ZPass?
This process needs to be done by the account owner. They can do it manually via the website, by calling the customer service center, or in person.
Websites like the NY E-ZPass allow you to register “temporary” vehicles, making the process straightforward.
Please note that if you drive someone else’s car with their transponder installed, you don’t need to do anything as the vehicle and tag are already registered on the system.
So you can drive as if the car was yours; there is no need to set up anything else.
Will I get in trouble if I use someone else’s E-ZPass?
You won’t have any problem if you follow the correct process. But, if not, be prepared to face an expensive fine delivered to your mail.
Suppose you do not provide the system with the correct information. In that case, it may appear as if you “stole” the transponder, and you may face even more severe charges.
Before using any E-ZPass transponder, please ensure it has enough balance and that your vehicle class is compatible with the device. Otherwise, you may end up committing a violation.
Please remember that each E-ZPass account can register a limited number of cars. Depending on the location, it can be four, six, or even eight.
Commercial accounts can request an unlimited number of vehicles, but it’s recommended to order individual transponders for each car.
Still, if you have any more doubts about this, please contact your location’s customer service center for more information.
You can contact them online, via phone call, or even in person, depending on what option is more convenient for you.
