Can I use my E-ZPass in a Rental Car?

A rental car can be costly, but we must succumb and use them at times. In cases like these, you very likely want to save as much money as possible. But, if the road you’ll take has too many toll lanes, you may consider whether you can use your E-ZPass in it.

The truth is that if you’re using a rental car and possess an E-ZPass transponder, the best option you have is to use it instead of opting for the rental company’s toll pass, which can be very expensive. Grab your E-ZPass transponder, and proceed to install it on the vehicle for the time being.

This is the right choice, as sometimes you may drive through a toll lane without noticing it.

In some states, such as New York, traditional toll plazas are disappearing, and that’s forcing drivers to register on the E-ZPass network so that they can drive through the cashless toll overpasses.

This will happen soon to all the states within the E-ZPass network and will expand to the whole country’s toll-collection systems.

What happens if you don’t use your transponder in a rental car?

You will end up paying for the tolls. That’s it, but you will end up paying too much money. This is why it is highly recommended to bring your transponder along whenever you need to use a rental car.

This is what you will be facing when you don’t bring your transponder and use it with a rental car.

The rental pass will charge you daily for using their toll pass. It is expensive, and you will be paying the fee every day. Unless you have an excellent financial situation and don’t mind giving money away, this is one of the worst possible scenarios.

You can drive through the toll lanes as if nothing matters. If you do this, you will commit a violation and will end up paying a costly fine that can be even worse than just paying for the tolls.

You will stop to pay in cash every time you’re near a toll booth. This will only happen in those roads where traditional toll plazas are available.

However, if the state has more electronic toll booths, you will likely commit violations because cash won’t be helpful.

How can I use my E-ZPass in a rental car?

There isn’t anything complicated about using your E-ZPass in a rental car. When you obtain the vehicle, it will probably have an E-ZPass transponder already mounted inside a lead-lined box, which you can close or open.

To use your transponder, make sure the said box is closed, and hold your transponder up (to the center of the windshield) whenever you drive through a toll lane.

As you can see, it’s straightforward and only requires a bit of effort, but you will be saving a lot of money in the long-run.

If you intend to do this, it is highly recommended to get a Massachusetts E-ZPass transponder, as they don’t charge you monthly.

Other options include North Carolina’s Quick Pass, which costs you a few dollars but works in several different areas.
